Basic Grooming Supply List For Puppy Owners:
1. Slicker Brush
2. Nail Clippers
3. Steel Comb (very important!)
For White Dogs
1. Angel Eyes for Tearstaining (hopefully I will be selling this before long).
2. Whitening Shampoo

For the most part the majority of my clients will depend on a Groomer to do the heavy grooming but everyone needs the basic tools on the list above as both the Maltese and the Maltipoo require quite a bit of grooming to prevent mats. Be careful using the slicker brush. These breeds have paper thin skin and it bruises and tears easily. Never neglect to COMB AFTER BRUSHING! Combing assures that you've gotten out tangles to the skin level. Again be careful, especially around the eye rim as the comb or brush can snag it.
Finding The Right Groomer
If at all possible depend heavily on word of mouth. The mobile dog groomers are great as they come to your home and you know they will be concentrating soley on YOUR DOG. I like groomers who work for Vet's offices too as they tend to look closer at problem areas and the vet can help if it's needed. If you have to pay extra to have your dog HAND DRIED then do so. It prevents overheating in cage dryers & the overall look of the groom job is greatly improved. As for looking for styles, look on this website and if you need to browse the Internet. Take a picture.
A good Groomer will:
1. Make sure your pet is properly bathed and dry.
2. Use gentle flea/tick shampoos or medicated shampoos if needed.
3. Will clean/shave between the pads of your dogs feet.
4. Will express your dogs anal glands.
5. Will shave your dogs privates and make a clear path for poo on your dog's boo boo.
6. Will treat your dog with respect, learn it's name, and greet you and the dog accordingly.
7. Will clean and remove any hair from your dog's ears.
8. Will cut the hair the way YOU want it cut.
9. Will REFUSE to demat a dog. This is pure cruelty. If you let your dog become matted, EXPECT it to be shaved!
10. Will agree to hand dry (perhaps for an extra fee).
Ways to help your Groomer:
1. Keep your dog clean and do the basics like brushing and combing at home.
2. Advise your groomer of any health issues.
3. Call your groomer and ask them "what days are you NOT BUSY"? Be flexible and take your dog on days when the groomer isn't as busy. This means your dog gets more personal attention & you'll get a better job, I promise!
4. If you own a white dog take your own bottle of whitening shampoo.
5. Be CLEAR and even write your grooming instructions down. Bring a picture. That helps to prevent misunderstandings.
